Community Outreach

Although Sierra Madre Civic Club members are amazingly generous and giving to their community all year long, not only in their time and talents but in their resources, Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons are a particular time of year where we often pause and dig a bit deeper to share and donate an extra something to our local community-based organizations. This year, as the Community Outreach Chair, I have chosen Friends In Deed as our community recipient. Here’s a little about them…..

Friends In Deed is an interfaith organization that provides supportive services to meet basic human needs, so our homeless and at-risk neighbors can rebuild their lives. Their core values are Compassion, Connection and Dignity. This organization has several programs: The Food Pantry, the Women’s Room, the Bad Weather shelter are just a few.

They provide food to more than 300 households per week (approximately 700+ people) to families in the Pasadena/ Altadena area. They provide canned goods, dry goods, juice, cereal, and other shelf stable foods. In addition to providing shelf stable foods, other goals are to provide meat and protein and fresh fruits and vegetables. When available, they offer toiletries, diapers and formula, and pet food, too. Besides receiving donations from some of the local grocery store chains, they receive much of their food from the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank and work with local organizations and businesses, including
Food Forward, Trader Joe’s, Ralphs, Urban Harvester, Whole Foods and others. However, another large source of their food comes from the community and that includes organizations such as Sierra Madre Civic Club. They rely heavily on these donations and our support is important and critical to their success.

I was immensely impressed at the gracious generous spirits that filled the room at the November meeting where I collected almost $450!! I will be delivering those checks and foods/toiletries purchased this Wednesday.  On behalf of Friends In Deed, I thank you!

If you missed the opportunity to donate, I will pass the GIVING box again at the December
meeting as we approach our Christmas Season. If you have any foods or toiletries you’d like to donate,
feel free to contact me at (626) 355 7955 or (626) 590 6086 (cell)
or lheller@chla.usc.edu and I’m happy to collect them from you.
